Explore Miami Beach History This July 13th

2This year marks the 100th birthday of the City of Miami Beach. As befits this vibrant and lively coastal community, there will be no shortage of events, parties, and special lounge deals throughout the coming months to celebrate the occasion. But if you want to go beyond the fun festivities and explore the heart of this culturally-rich community, then don’t miss the Centennial Walking Tour taking place July 13.

Presented by the Miami Design Preservation League, the 90-minute tour takes you through the interesting history of Miami Beach as told through its famous landmarks and architectural qualities, many of them one-of-a-kind. The tour starts at 11:00 a.m. at the ArtDeco Welcome Center located on the beach (across the intersection of 10th Avenue and Ocean Drive).

The tour is a great way to see past the fun and sun – which are of course great – but also to appreciate how unique and cosmopolitan Miami Beach is. From the beginning, the city was at the forefront of innovation in architecture and urban planning – after all, it was practically built from scratch, combining a swampy barrier island buffered by dredged up earth from the bay.

The Art Deco buildings and landmarks that define the cityscape are holdovers from a bygone era in the 1920s and ‘30s, when sleek and modernist architecture was in vogue. Whereas much of the world has torn down and replaced these unique structures, Miami Beach remains among the few that has preserved them – such that some 30 blocks of hotels and apartment houses with this art form remain.

In 1979, this Miami Beach Architectural District as listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places – a testament to the city’s unique heritage, which you can now explore and embrace firsthand. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for seniors and students. You can purchase them at the Welcome Center, which is just a few minutes drive from the Z Ocean Miami Beach Hotel.
