Though better known for its sunshine and glitz, Miami also offers a wide range of unique and exceptional cultural landmarks that are some of the oldest and most interesting in the world. Our own South Beach Hotel is a reflection of this heritage, with its eye-catching design inspired by the city’s iconic Art Deco architecture. Here is a quick look at the amazing sites there are to see and explore from the Z Ocean Miami Beach Hotel.
Did you know that one of the oldest buildings in all the Western Hemisphere is in North Miami Beach? The Ancient Spanish Monastery is a truly hidden gem, with history that is as amazing as its beauty. First built in Spain in the early 12th century, the monastery was closed in the 1830s and turned into a granary and stable. In 1925, William Randolph Hearst, the famous newspaper tycoon, purchased the structure and had it carefully dismantle and shipped from Spain to the United States in over 11,000 wooden crates. It has since been painstakingly preserved to retain its unique architecture and materials.
Not much farther from the Spanish Monastery is the world-renowned Holocaust Memorial at 1933-1945 Meridian Avenue. This powerful tribute to millions was designed by acclaimed architect Kenneth Treister. It features a tunnel-like passage that chronicles the event, a photographic mural, and a memorial wall. Guided tours, which include a documentary about the memorial’s construction, is available on request. Admission to this artistic and emotionally potent site free to the public and open seven days a week.
For lovers of culture and history, no visit to Miami Beach is complete with a tour of the world-famous Art Deco Historic District. Beloved by historians, artists, and travelers alike, it features the largest collection of Art Deco architecture on the planet. The white facades, colorful neon lights, and sleek modernist designs that line Ocean Drive speak to the city’s history – and continued reputation – as a hotbed of culture, ambition, and experimentation. Among the highlights include buildings featured in Hollywood movies like Scarface. The Delano and The Raleigh are must-sees. Also pay a visit to the many world-class clubs, lounges, and restaurants that operate from these historic structures. Walking tours are available daily from the Art Deco Welcome Center in South Beach.
