Celebrate a Historic Day in Wilton Manors

stonewallPrideDid you miss out on the Miami Beach Pride festivities last month? No need to worry, several pride events are happening all throughout the month of June and one of the largest is the annual Wilton Manors Stonewall Festival & Parade. The festival earns its name from the riots that took place on June 18, 1969 when members of the LGBT community violently demonstrated against a police raid. The day has since become historic for being an important event that contributed significantly to the gay liberation movement and LGBT rights. You can still visit the site of the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village to this day.

The Wilton Manors Stonewall Festival & Parade is among the largest community driven events of its kind in South Florida. Usually, it is attended by 20,000 to 30,000 individuals and families each year. Besides the parade, the event also features numerous street vendors, live performances, food trucks, and more. Wilton Manors is considered one of the most LGBT-friendly cities in South Florida, with a large community and several gay-owned businesses.

You won’t need to pay to attend the festival and parade, though donations are accepted. If you’re planning on attending, it will be held at Wilton Drive on June 18th, the same day as the Stonewall riots. Should you need a place to stay, our Miami Beach hotel is LGBT friendly and we would love to have you as our guest on this historic day. Call 1.877.688.4232 to book your stay at our South Beach hotel today and support a great cause!

Justin Bieber Brings Purpose to Miami

JBtour“Is it too late now to say sorry?” For 22 year old Justin Bieber, he has absolutely nothing to be sorry about. The singer-songwriter has become a genuine multiplatinum-selling pop star since his early beginnings as just another YouTube star looking for his big break. His fourth studio album, Purpose, was released last year and debuted at number one on the Billboard charts with catchy hits like “What Do You Mean?”, the acoustically-tinged “Love Yourself”, and yes, “Sorry”.

Justin Bieber is currently on tour promoting his highly successful Purpose album, which has sold over three million copies worldwide. The appropriately named Purpose World Tour has received positive reviews for its choreography, the set list, and Bieber’s several acoustic performances that harken back to his early days performing songs on his guitar before he became a bestselling musician.

Originally scheduled to perform on Saturday, July 2nd, demand for Bieber’s tour has been so overwhelming that a second date has been added for the following day, Sunday July 3rd at 7:30 pm. Bieber will be performing at the American Airlines Arena, just a couple of minutes away from Z Ocean Hotel South Beach. A Brief History of Miami Beach

miamiBeach-1Miami Beach wasn’t always the swanky, tourism friendly city that it is today. Much like the rest of South Florida, it has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s when it was a piece of empty land purchased by Henry and Charles Lum for the absurdly low price of 75 cents an acre. Considering how valuable the barrier island is now, that price is fascinating.

It wasn’t until 1876 that Miami Beach saw its first development called the Biscayne House of Refuge, which served as a haven for shipwrecked individuals. After a failed attempt at turning the island into a coconut plantation, agriculturist John Stiles Collins formed the Miami Beach Improvement Company in the early 1900s, which coincidentally marked the first time the island was ever referred to as “Miami Beach”. With the help of American entrepreneur Carl G. Fisher—also known as the father of upscale Fisher Island—Collins would create the Collins Bridge, which was at the time the longest wooden bridge in the world. Today that bridge has since been replaced and now goes by the familiar name of the Venetian Causeway.

Through the Miami Beach Improvement Company, the city began to make strides towards becoming the metropolis it is today after Collins oversaw the development of residential projects, a casino, and an oceanfront hotel. John Collins passed away in 1928 but his legacy is permanently remembered: frequently traveled Collins Avenue is named after him.

Miami Beach officially became a city in 1917 and after Carl Fisher took over development, it quickly began to attract wealthy industrialists that sought to build winter homes. As the city’s tourism grew, many hotels began to emerge signaling the beginning of a huge building boom that have helped turn the city into what it is today: a culturally rich, valuable, and incredibly diverse barrier island.

Z Ocean Hotel South Beach is one of the top hotels on the island and a perfect way to get a feel for the city lifestyle and ambiance. Our all-suite Miami Beach hotel is just a couple of feet from the sunny beaches. Get to know the city and soak in its many sights by calling 1-877-688-4232 to book a stay at our South Beach hotel this Memorial Day weekend.
