Miami Beach has a young history, but within that time period its rich and colorful architecture has attracted millions of tourists year round. Miami Beach has continued to evolve with the times while staying true to its heritage by keeping the Art Deco style. Art Deco is not just architecture, but a culture. This style first became popular in the 1920’s in Paris and eventually became an international style in the 1930’s. The two best-known examples of Art Deco are located in New York City, one is the Empire State Building and the other is the Chrysler Building.
A majority of the Art Deco buildings in Miami were built in the 1930’s and 1940’s. With their tropical and ocean influences, Miami’s Art Deco buildings are sometimes characterized as Tropical Deco. This style is defined by pastel colors, floral and aquatic decorations, and a sort of nautical design reminiscent of ocean liners.
When you are walking towards the beach, as Ocean Drive becomes Collins Avenue, the history of Miami Beach architecture unfolds before your eyes. Each building has been renovated and preserved to characterize the essence of Miami Beach through art, design, and architecture.
To celebrate this historic architecture, Art Deco Weekend was created 40 years ago by the Miami Design Preservation League to showcase the beautiful Art Deco buildings of Miami Beach, and help preserve it so that it can be enjoyed by future generations. This event filled weekend takes place from January 13th to the 15th and features a retro fashion show, Art Deco dance, art exhibits, live music, classic car shows and countless other fun filled events.
