The 90s brought us a tremendous amount of talented hip-hop, rap, and R&B acts. Arrested Development, Erykah Badu, and The Roots are some of the artists that saw success during the decade. Arguably eclipsing their success was The Fugees, a trio comprised of rappers Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, and singer Lauryn Hill. The group scored several hits, particularly the cover of Roberta Flack’s 1971 song “Killing Me Softly”, which prominently featured Lauryn Hill’s vocals.
Shortly after the release of their second and final album The Score, Hill embarked upon a solo career, releasing her solo debut album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998 which went on to achieve massive success, selling nearly 20 million copies worldwide and winning five Grammy Awards.
While Hill has yet to properly follow up her debut album, the singer has continued to tour for years. If you’d like to see her in concert, she will be performing at The Fillmore on December 9th as part of the MLH Caravan: A Diaspora Calling! Concert Series featuring a multitude of artists from various parts of the African diaspora, in addition to Hill’s hits. Previous performances have included well-known songs like “Everything Is Everything” and even a few Fugees tunes, so it should be a fun experience for new and longtime fans.
The Fillmore is less than ten minutes away from Z Ocean Hotel South Beach and it’s a perfect play to stay if you’re planning on seeing Lauryn Hill in concert.
